My area of research is Numerical modelling of flow through air filters which are used in main battle tanks.
Engine air filters are to be designed effectively to remove airborne contaminants to protect the engine from wear.During operation, the separated dust particles in various sizes are arrested by the fibers.The deposition of dust induces a flow resistance, which increases with dust loading. Eventually a limit is reached where the pressure drop is equal to the critical pressure drop, beyond which the engine will start starving for air. At this point the filter has to be replaced or cleaned to reduce the flow restriction.
A design of air cleaning system with self cleaning arrangement can overcome this problem.To design such a self cleaning system complete idea over flow field with dust loading is required. But the excessive test costs forbid complete experimental investigation and CFD makes the task a little easy.
Commercial CFD code Fluent has been used for the simulation.
