2012 - 2013 School Year Highlights

This past year, RAiSE hosted six instructional presentations at Park Junior High’s LRC – two of which were co-sponsored by District 102. There was strong attendance at these presentations and was pleased to welcome many newcomers. We receive many suggestions for presentations each year, and were fortunate last year to have several professionals donate their time to speak to our community about the following requested topics:
  • Building Self-Advocacy Skills in Students with Disabilities”

  • Understanding Reading Difficulties and Resources for Students”

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder”

  • Children and Transitions: Strategies for Home and School”

  • Anxiety at School” (co-sponsored)

  • Autism” (co-sponsored)

Note: Audio files and Presentation materials of most of these presentations are available for download on our Meetings and Events page for the presentation.

Resource Table
In order to provide information regarding special needs and learning disabilities to the District 102 community, we maintain a Resource Table for those attending our meetings. The Resource Table contains of hard copies of  materials (fliers/brochures/magazines/articles/etc.) regarding services and special events, as well as educational and recreational opportunities. Last school year, RAiSE expanded its connections in order to obtain a greater and more current selection of materials.
Meetings with District 102 Administration
One of RAiSE’s goals is to have an ongoing dialog with District 102’s administration. To further this goal, members of RAiSE met with Dr. Warren Shillingburg and Ms. Kathy Tomasiewicz four times during the school year to discuss a variety of topics which affect children with special needs and learning disabilities in the District.
Throughout the year, we publish e-newsletters containing information about RAiSE presentations, as well as resources, opportunities, and presentations offered by other groups and organizations that may be of interest to our contacts.
