In November, RAiSE is hosting a presentation on ADHD by Dr. Mary Lou Gutierrez.  During this presentation Dr. Gutierrez will discuss the definition and causes of this disorder. She will also talk about other problems that could account for ADHD-like symptoms. In addition, she will present information about diagnostic assessments for ADHD and discuss a multidisciplinary approach to treatment including medication and alternative health practices.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 3-5% of children have ADHD, a neurobiological disorder characterized by inattention  and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Generally, children with ADHD have problems paying attention or concentrating.  Children with this condition may have difficulty following directions and may become easily bored or frustrated with tasks. Some may tend to move constantly and are impulsive, not stopping to think before they act. The behaviors that are common with ADHD interfere with a child's ability to function at school and at home.

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 PM in the Park Jr. High LRC (333 N. Park, LaGrange, IL 60525).

Dr Gutierrez is an Associate Professor at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.  She is the Medical Director of Pediatric Psychiatry for Loyola University Health Systems, where her interests include: anxiety, child psychiatry, and learning disorders.
