Salzburg, Austria.
Rainham are drawn in Group A of the competition alongside Hastings, Folkestone, Medway and Snodland. The group winner will proceed to the semi-final stage.
Rainham v Snodland
A convincing win with Martin Taylor scoring 4/4, Ben Spink 3/4, Andy Waters 3/4, Rob Springett 2.5/3 & Bruce Morrison 1/1.
The time handicaps employed in these events generate some amusing incidents and this match was no exception. In the final round Ben had an overwhelming position before he played QxP check at which point his opponent offered his hand which Ben accepted to end the game. Looking on from the side-lines I pointed out that the defence NxQ was available which would have given the Snodland player a large material advantage at which point both players laughinghly admitted they had assumed the game had ended in check-mate. In terms of chess etiquette the game was undoubtedly finished but with an involuntary resignation rather than a mate.
Rainham v Hastings
A disappointing result, Rainham won the opening round 3-1, shared the spoils in rounds 2 and 3 but crashed scoring only half a point in the final round to lose the match by the narrowest possible margin.
Another fine performance by Martin Taylor scoring 3.5/4 with Tom Stonehouse 1/4, Andy Waters 2/4 and Bruce Morrison 1/4 the other contributors.
Folkestone v Rainham
After the first two rounds were both tied 2-2, we edged in front in the third 2.5 - 1.5 and drew further ahead in the last round to run out clear winners. Martin Taylor scored 4/4, Ben Spink 2/4, Andy Waters 2.5/4 and Paul Giddins 1/4.
Medway v Rainham
Rainham established an early lead with a 3-1 score in the first round, we then drew further ahead with a 2.5-1.5 margin in round two followed by two drawn rounds to run out comfortable winners 9.5 - 6.5. Paul Giddins, Dale Sibborn and Andy Waters all scored 3/4 although Bruce had a tough night with 0.5/4.
Rainham with 3 match pts and 40 game pts finished the group stage in second place behind Folkestone who also had 3 match pts but pipped us with 47 game pts. Consequently Rainham have failed to qualify for the final stage.
