Summer Quickplay 2022

The KCCA Summer Quickplay Handicap will consist of 21 teams and will be split into 4 groups with Rainham drawn in group B along with Swale, Sevenoaks, Weald of Kent and Medway. The group stage is to be completed by Monday September 12th when each group winner will qualify for the knock-out stage.

Rainham v Swale

After a two-year break from this competition we had a comprehensive win in our opening match against Swale. Swale elected to have the white pieces in rounds 2 and 4 but 100% successes from Martin Taylor and Alistair Compton enabled us to record at least 3 games points in each of the four rounds. Chris also scored a healthy 3/4 in his first ever Summer Quickplay match.

Match Scores: Martin Taylor 4, Alistair Compton 4, Robert Springett 1½, Chris Brown 3

Medway v Rainham

This was a close match that ended up drawn over the four rounds. Rainham had white in rounds 1 and 3 which ended as a draw on both occasions. Earlier in the evening Rainham had already completed a 3-1 victory in round 2, now having the advantage going into the final round of the evening. However only with Robert’s win on board 4 were we able to claim a draw in a match we could have lost.

Match Scores: Martin Taylor 3, Dave Barnes 0, Andy Waters 3, Robert Springett 2

Rainham v Weald of Kent

The third group game that was rearranged from earlier in the month ended up in a 10½ - 5½ win to Rainham. The first two rounds finished 3-1 giving a 4 point advantage going into the final 2 rounds. Another win in round 3 with the final round all square means that a win in our final game against Sevenoaks would be enough to qualify as group winners.

Match Scores: Martin Taylor 4, Toby Stock 2, Robert Springett 3½, Chris Brown 1

Sevenoaks v Rainham

In our final game with the other results completed it meant that we needed a draw to win the group. The first round finished with a one point advantage going to the home side. However, after winning rounds 2 and 4 and drawing round 3 enabled us to win the match 9–7 to proceed to the Semi Final stages of the Summer Quickplay.

Match Scores Martin Taylor 4, Alistair Compton 2, Andy Waters 1½, Robert Springett 1½

Semi-final, Rainham v Beckenham

Rainham won this close match against a strong Beckenham team 9½,- 6½. Losing Rounds 1 and 3 but winning Round 2 by 3-1 left it all square with the final round to play. The final round was the won convincingly to win the semi-final match and to meet Hastings in the final

Match Scores Martin Taylor 3, Alistair Compton 1½, Andy Waters 3½, Robert Springett 1½

Final, Hastings v Rainham

Rainham won convincingly winning each of the first three rounds 3-1 thereby achieving an unassailable lead before easing off to draw the last round 2-2 to give a final score of 10½ - 5½.
