Curacao Underwater Chess Festival 2008
The KCCA Summer Quickplay Handicap is split into 4 groups of 5 teams. Rainham have been drawn in group "A" along with Maidstone, Medway, Sevenoaks and Swale. The group stage is to be completed by Thursday September 14th when each group winner will qualify for the knock-out stage.
Medway v Rainham
Rainham had the perfect start to their opening Summer Quickplay match with a convincing 4-0 win in the opening round. Honours were shared in round two but a 2½ - 1½ success in the third round sealed the win with a round to spare.
Scores: Martin Taylor 3/4, Dave Barnes 3/4, Steve Pike 2/4 and Rob Springett 2½/4.
Rainham v Swale
After dropping behind 1-3 in the first round we drew level after round two and then shared the spoils in both rounds three and four to tie this hard fought match.
Scores: Martin Taylor 4/4, Andy Waters 3/4, Tom Stonehouse 1/4 and Steve Pike 0/4.
Maidstone v Rainham
After storming into a 10 - 0 lead we eased off to run out convincing winners 14 - 2 against a novice Maidstone team. This sets a new record for us in this competition beating our previous best, the 13.5 - 2.5 win over Snodland in 2010. If we can avoid losing to Sevenoaks in our final match we will win the group and qualify for the semi-finals.
Scores: Martin Taylor 4/4, Dave Barnes 3/4, Andy Waters 4/4 and Rob Springett 3/4.
Rainham v Sevenoaks
A tough match against a pretty handy Sevenoaks team saw Rainham edge the win that means we top the group and progress into the semi-finals.
Scores: Martin Taylor 4/4, Dave Barnes 1.5/4, Andy Waters 1.5/4 and Rob Springett 2/4. Martin has been in irrepressible form having scored 15/16 in the group matches.
Semi-final: Rainham v Hastings
The long awaited semi-final finally took place in December which proved to be a tough match between two equally matched teams. After the first round finishing level, Rainham then took a commanding two point lead in the second round that was to remain until the final round of games. With Rainham losing 2-1 in the final round and Dave's game unfinished there were thoughts the match may have gone to a tie-break. Fortunately Dave managed to earn a draw winning the match. Afterwards it was revealed that Rainham would have won the tie break purely on Martin winning all of his games.
Scores: Martin Taylor 4/4, Dave Barnes 2.5/4, Andy Waters 1.5/4 and Rob Springett 0.5/4.
Final: Charlton v Rainham
A close run thing! Scores: Martin Taylor 3.5/4, Dave Barnes 1.5/4, Andy Waters 2.5/4 and Rob Springett 0/4.
