Club Championship 2015

The New York Tournament of November 1918 hosted by the Manhattan Chess Club.

Seated in the foreground, Oscar Chajes as white takes on Jose Raul Capablanca who won the 12 round event with 10.5 pts. Also in the picture is Frank Marshall who was the reigning US Champion at the time, he is seated at the second table with his back to Capablanca.

Capablanca's first round encounter with Marshall introduced to the world the Marshall Attack variation of the Ruy Lopez.

See Games section for this famous encounter.

The Cuban Capablanca would later go on to win the World Championship in 1921, a title he retained until 1927.

Frank Marshall was one of the strongest players of the early twentieth century, he won the US Championship in 1909 aged 32 and retained the title until 1936 aged 59.

The format for the 2015 season's Club Championship is as follows:

There will be 2 or 3 Divisions, depending upon entries.

Games will be played with a clock; unless both players agree otherwise the rate of play shall be as follows:

  • Division 1- 35 moves in 75 minutes plus a 15 minute quickplay finish.

  • Division 2 - 24 moves in 50 minutes plus a 15 minute quickplay finish. If both players prefer then the time control of 35 moves in 75 minutes plus a 15 minute quickplay finish may also be used.

To encourage games to be played, the first tie-break to be used shall be the "3-2-1" scoring system: three points shall be awarded for a win, two for a draw, one for a loss and none for an unplayed game.

The results of all games shall be submitted for grading.

If a player plays less than 30% of their games then their results shall not count for the final tables (but games played will still be graded.)

The pairings for each round are shown below, refer to the Calendar of Events for the schedule.

The closing date for entries will be 30th April 2015 - any entries after this date shall be accepted only at the tournament controller's discretion.

The tournament controller is Martin Taylor.
