Judit Polgar GM
Hungarian Judit was born in 1976, the youngest of the three Polgar sisters. Their father Lazlo believed that children could attain exceptional achievements if trained from an early age and with the aid of his wife Klara he set out to prove his theory by teaching their daughters chess as well as to speak esperanto. With the aid of professional coaches Susan went on to become a Grand Master and Sofia an International Master but it was Judit who really excelled becoming a chess superstar. By the age of 12 she was awarded the IM title; it took both Fischer and Kasparov until the age of fourteen to achieve the same goal. By 1989 she had risen to be ranked the leading female player in the world, a position she has never relinquished. In 1991 she was awarded the Grand Master title at the venerable age of fourteen.
Judit competed in and won many international tournaments including a tie for first place with Russian GM Evgeny Bareev in the Hastings Tournament of 1992-3. Over the ensuing years she gained victories over many of the world's elite players including both Karpov and Kasparov. She reached her peak in 2005 when ranked eighth in the world with an Elo rating of 2735.
On August 13th 2014 Judit announced her retirement from competitive chess with an Elo rating of 2676 and sixty-fifth in the world rankings but still the leading female player.
Judit never competed for the Women's World Championship (a title her sister Susan held from 1996-99) but she is unquestionably the strongest female ever to have played the game.
