The civilizations of Maya, Aztecs, and Incas that once flourished in Central and South America shared common elements. People practiced farming, developed social structures, rasied armies, and worshiped gods. However, the accomplishments of each group continue to amaze. The Maya, for example, developed a system of mathematics. The Aztecs created a remarkably modern city. The Incas engineered a system of roads to unite their empire.
How so sophisticated a society as the Maya disappeared is still a mystery. We know that Spanish explorers precipitated the destruction of both the Aztec and Inca empires.

Art Project: Aztec Quetzalcoatl
Examples of the god can be found throughout the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. The word Quetzalcoatl is derived from quetzal and coatl—meaning quetzal serpent. A quetzal is a brightly plumed tropical bird with brilliant bronze, green, and red feathers. The face of Quetzalcoatl probably had green, blue, and yellow feathers with red lips around the teeth. The terraces of the temple are decorated with massive, projecting stone heads of this feathered serpent god. The Aztec people worshipped many gods, and believed that Quetzalcoatl helped to create their sacred universe. Many of these beliefs and symbols were adopted from previous Mesoamerican cultures
