After the Qualinet meeting on Friday, Sep 27, an excursion to Olympia where the Olympic Games started 2500 years ago is planned. It will be an opportunity to explore the birth place of Olympic Games. Olympic Games were a series of athletic competitions among representatives of city-states of Ancient Greece. They were held in honor of Zeus, and the Greeks gave them a mythological origin. Historical records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia.

The ancient stadium, the temple of Hera, the temple of Zeus and the Leonideum are some of the sites that someone is able to see. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, one of the most important museums in Greece, presents the long history of the most celebrated sanctuary of antiquity, the sanctuary of Zeus. The museum’s permanent exhibition contains findings from the excavations in the sacred precinct of the Altis dating from prehistoric times to the Early Christian period.

Olympia is located about 25 km away from Pyrgos and 112 km away from Patras. Also it is 100 km and 360 km away from Kalamata airport and Athens airport respectively. The ancient site of Olympia is an easily walkable 5-10 minutes south of the modern village.
