28.01.14 (Circular Acad-04/2014): Open Text-based Assessment in the Annual Examination of Class XI, March, 2014

Highlights of the circular are: 
  1. The schools will be provided the question/s alongwith the relevant theme/text already provided by the CBSE.
  2. The text and the question/s will be provided to schools through E-mail on their registered email-ids.
  3. The text and question/s will be mailed in the first week of February 2014. Their Marking Scheme will follow soon.
  4. The schools are compulsorily required to use the OTBA Questions provided by the CBSE though email (to be inserted in the Question Paper prepared by the school)
  5. Schools are not allowed to completely change the OTBA question provided by the Board. However the schools can make minor modification in the OTBA question to the extent of factual errors, grammatical mistakes, etc.
  6. Due care has been taken by the CBSE while preparing these questions and under no circumstance; the question should be replaced by the one of a different difficulty level/testing objective.

29.11.13 (Notification 61Provision of additional time for attempting OTBA based question(s)

As per circular nos. 39/2013, 53/2013 and 69/2013 the scheme of Open Text Based Assessment has been introduced for Classes IX and XI w. e. f. March 2014 examinations. It has been provided in the circulars that OTBA questions will be in addition to usual questions set for three hours. In view of the above the schools are directed to give time of 3-3½ hours to the examinees in each of the subjects where open text based assessment has been introduced. This time will be in addition to the 15 minutes allotted to read the question paper.


According to CBSE Circular Acad-53/2013With regard to Summative Assessment II of Class IX, the following points may please be noted:
  1. The question papers in main subjects at Summative Assessment II will be of 90 marks (in English, of 70 marks + 20 marks for ASL) based on prescribed syllabus and question paper design.
  2. The question paper in each main subject will have a separate section of 10 marks for open-text-based assessment (OTBA).
  3. The OTBA section will comprise of text material accompanied by 2-3 questions based on that text.The questions based on text will be of higher order thinking skills requiring students to apply learnings to the situations given in the article/ report/ case study and draw inferences/conclusions therefrom. The questions based on the text will be open ended, extrapolativeinferential and look at personal response justifying a point of view.
  4. With the addition of OTBA of 10 marks, the total paper of summative assessment in a subject will be of 100 marks. However weightage of SA II will remain the same viz30%.

IMPORTANT POINTS:
  1. Students don't need to carry OTBA Material (Syllabus) to examination hall. The question paper in each main subject will have a separate section of 10 marks for open-text-based assessment (OTBA). The OTBA section will comprise of text material accompanied by 2-3 questions based on that text. The questions will be based on one of the two themes of open text material
    supplied to students in advance.
  2. The questions under OTBA Section will not be directly based on the text material supplied. Rather it will test the students’ ability to apply the learnt concepts to the situation given in the open text material. The students will be tested on their ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret the given situation and offer suggestions and opinions on the given issues based on their knowledge of concepts.
