3. Softened consonants and syllables

The softener is a modifier of a consonant, it is not used as a standalone character. All consonants may be softened except the following:

  • U+E65F SYLABICA LETTER SOFT CH
  • U+E661 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT J
  • U+E663 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT SH
  • U+E665 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT ZH
  • U+E676 SYLABICA LETTER Y
  • U+E677 SYLABICA LETTER W

Syllables are formed automatically from orthographically sensible combinations of a consonant (possibly softened) and a vowel.

The following syllables are orthographically sensible:

  • before U+E650 SYLABICA LETTER I, any consonant except:
    • U+E666 SYLABICA LETTER K + U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
    • U+E669 SYLABICA LETTER G + U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
    • U+E675 SYLABICA LETTER L + U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
  • before U+E651 SYLABICA LETTER HARD I, one of the following consonants:
    • U+E65F SYLABICA LETTER SOFT CH
    • U+E661 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT J
    • U+E663 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT SH
    • U+E665 SYLABICA LETTER SOFT ZH
    • U+E666 SYLABICA LETTER K
    • U+E669 SYLABICA LETTER G
    • U+E675 SYLABICA LETTER L
    • U+E676 SYLABICA LETTER Y
    • U+E677 SYLABICA LETTER W
    • any consonant followed by U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
  • before U+E652 SYLABICA LETTER E, any consonant except:
    • U+E666 SYLABICA LETTER K + U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
    • U+E669 SYLABICA LETTER G + U+E678 SYLABICA SOFTENER
  • before U+E653 SYLABICA LETTER HARD E, one of the following consonants:
    • U+E666 SYLABICA LETTER K
    • U+E669 SYLABICA LETTER G
  • before other vowels, any consonant.

Forming of a syllable can be suppressed with U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER between a consonant and a vowel.
