I am an Engineering Manager at LinkedIn. Previously, I was a research scientist at TheFind Inc. Before that, I was a Research Scientist at AT&T interactive Research and Yahoo! Labs.

My research interests are Natural Language Processing & Machine Learning. I defended my thesis in May, 2008. My thesis is entitled Learning Structured Classifiers for Statistical Dependency Parsing. My PhD supervisors were Dale Schuurmans and Dekang Lin.

New! I am giving a tutorial (with Yue Zhang from the University of Oxford) on "Recent Advances in Dependency Parsing" at  Human Language Technologies: The 11th Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL-HLT 2010)
Please join us in Los Angeles, CA this summer! (Tutorial date: June 1, 2010; Conference date: June 2-4, 2010)
Tutorial slides are available: Part 1 and 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

New! I am co-organizing a NAACL 2009 Workshop on Semi-supervised Learning for Natural Language Processing.
Please join us in Boulder, CO this summer! (
Submission deadline: March 9, 2009; Workshop date: June 4, 2009)

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research background is natural language processing and machine learning. I have been working on deploying natural language processing techniques and developing machine learning algorithms for information retrieval, data mining and web search.  More specifically, I'm focused on:
  • Dependency parsing
  • Text mining
  • Search query recommendation/suggestion
  • Query log analysis
  • Large-scale data processing (Hadoop/Map-reduce streaming)
  • Unsupervised/semi-supervised approaches for web search and online advertising
