Specus is the working title of a Zeldroidania game I am working on for the NES. This is very much a labor of love for the NES and the genre.
Confused as to what Zeldroidania is? Me too :D I am referring to a mixture of the elements of Zelda II, Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Everyone else gets to make up terms for the genre, so why not me?
I have re-written most of Specus from the ground up. More specifically, I wrote a brand new engine while reusing some parts of the old "NES Adventure Game" demo I did (now referred to as Demo 1). The new engine supports both horizontally and vertically scrolling levels, but not at the same time. I would have liked to have done four-way scrolling, but this was the best compromise between the complexity of the code, the size of the level data and what I actually need to pull this game off :D
Everything else is missing from this demo. There is no character or anything. Use the left and right buttons to scroll (even on the vertical map). Hold B to go as fast as the engine is built to scroll. Hold A to go even faster and break the scrolling engine. Press Start to cycle between two maps, one horizontal, the other vertical.

This is my previous demo ROM, which at the time I called NES Adventure Game. It was a single-screen game meaning it did not scroll. Rather it flipped from screen to screen in the same way Battle Kid does. This is much easier to program but does not work very well for this type of game. The character can easily clear half of a room before you know what is going on.
On the up shot, there is a little palace scene to explore, swords to swing and zombies to kill. You can't beat zombies :D
