The State 4-H Goat Judging Contest and Goat Bowl will be on Saturday, July 29th.

2017 Goat Judging Contest, Goat Bowl and Workshop

The 2017 Contest will start on Saturday, July 29th with registration from 7:45 - 8:45 a.m. in the A. N. Poindexter Veterinary Clinic on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.  The written test will start at 9:00.  Judging will take place in the nearby covered farm shed from 10:00  - 12:00.  The Goat Bowl and Goat Skills Contest will start at about 12:30.

Their will be 2 workshops that will take place at the International Goat Research Center starting at 2:00 on Friday, July 28th.  The early session will be more for those that have not previously competed in this program, and will cover more of the basics and how to fill in the contest forms.  The later workshop that starts at 5:00, will be for the more experienced participants.  The later workshop will cover more of the details of judging and presentation of oral reasons.

The Entry Form

Even though there is no registration fee currently assigned to this program, please fill out and return an entry form or contact me by so I have an idea how many people are coming.

In order to meet the demands of the PVAMU Compliance Office, we will have to have early registration for on-campus events this year.  I expect that will be about 1 month prior to the event.

These are the study guides you will need for the written test

  • American Boer Goat Assn. Standards and History 15k Download
  • Dairy Goat Judging Techniques 438k Download
  • IBGA Boer Goat Anatomy 140k Download
  • Nigerian Dwarf Breed Standards 8k Download
  • Official USBGA Scorecard 11k Download
  • B5018 Judging Meat Goats 14k Download

These are samples of the written test.  As you can see, knowing the parts is half of the test!

The Quiz Bowl question are here.  Anything in the above guides could also be a question.

This year I have combined the Junior and Senior Bowl into 1 category.  You can make your teams up with mixed Juniors and Seniors.

We have officially added the Goat Skills Contest this year.  It will be very broad and cover identification, evaluation and skills that you should know to be successful in your goat project. No study materials , if it is Goat Project related, it is fair game!  There will be awards for the top 3 contestants in the Junior and Senior category.
