The State 4-H Goat Judging Contest and Goat Bowl will be on Saturday, July 28th, 2018.

2018 Goat Judging Contest, Goat Bowl, and Workshop

The 2018 Contest will start on Saturday, July 28th with registration from 7:45 - 8:45 a.m. in the Carden-Waller Cooperative Extension Building on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.  The written test will start at 9:00.  Judging will take place in the nearby covered farm shed from 10:00  - 12:00.  The Goat Bowl and Goat Skills Contest will start at about 12:30.

There will be 2 workshops that will take place at the International Goat Research Center starting at 2:00 on Friday, July 27th.  The early session will be more for those that have not previously competed in this program and will cover the basics and how to fill in the contest forms.  The later workshop that starts at 5:00, will be for the more experienced participants.  The later workshop will cover more of the details of judging and presentation of oral reasons.

The Entry Form

Even though there is no registration fee for this program, please fill out and return an entry form or contact me by so I have an idea how many people are coming, including parents/coaches.  We will purchase lunch based on our total participation as of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 25.   Please include the name and age of the participating youth and a good email contact for the parents/guardians.  There is a University release of indemnity form that I have to email to the parents that MUST be signed and accompany the youth to the contest if a parent will not be there.

The entry form is in the rules packet, download it here, or email the information directly to Scott Horner at sdhorner@pvamu.edu  Please note, the Wednesday, July 25 date is not the entry deadline, but, it is the "when you may not get fed if you are not entered" date!  I would really appreciate having entries turned in as soon as possible if you know for sure you are coming.

These are the study guides you will need for the written test

These are samples of the written test.  As you can see, knowing the parts is half of the test!

The Quiz Bowl questions are here.  Anything in the above guides could also be a question.

This year I have combined the Junior and Senior Bowl into 1 category.  You can make your teams up with mixed Juniors and Seniors. Remember that Seniors will be practicing and be giving oral reasons at the same time as this event.
