I got this Inspiron in October 2007. I was all excited to open it up as the courier arrived. The excitement was killed as soon as I switched on the power button, setted up my account and finally booted to Windows Vista. The HDD just had a C: drive in which everything was installed and a D: drive which has the recovery. The HDD was locked by Dell, so Vista partitioner couldn't do a thing  It also had a hidden Media Direct partition, which can be called as "Dell's beauty without brains feature".

I used the laptop in the condition I got just for one and a half months. After which the performance degraded, Windows Defender got corrupted and the battery notification icon just disappeared. It's natural the performance degraded since I had no option rather than to install everything into the C: drive. But I still have no clue how Windows Defender got corrupted and the battery notification icon disappeared :O. So I disabled Windows Defender, which was of no use in the first place. But the battery icon and its options was necessary. I didn't want to mess with the laptop since the warranty may go void. So I called up Dell Tech Support. They asked me to do useless steps which didn't solve a thing. So they asked me to reset the laptop to factory settings and gave me the instructions to do so. eveything went off fine.

I asked them able the possibility to partition the C: drive, they said its not possible unless a format a reinstall is performed, and the recovery partition will also be lost in the process. The manufacture lock of HDD is something I just hate. The gave me the instruction to do so, with the Media Direct CD. There is another work around to just reinstalled your without loosing ur data on other drive. I backed up my data and followed their instructions. But in this case too, your only able create to drive C: and D:.There is also a work around to create more partitions, once you boot into Vista.

The  one year warranty was a useless thing. They didn't even replace the batteries. Nor provided any effective solutions to my laptop problems.

One thing I learned from calling Dell Tech Support is that, don't call them....solve your problems by yourself or google or ask your techie friends. This is the simplest, quickest and safest way to put an end to your problems. It is been 1 year and 4 months with my laptop. I'm far much better in troubleshooting, still learning than when I got the laptop......for which I'm very thankfull to Dell Tech Support for not providing effective solutions. :D
