Anthony Maria Irudayam

THE ARJUNA AWARDEE 

   Anthony Maria Irudayam popularly and afectionetly known as 'Maria' was born on 2nd June, 1956 at Chennai (Tamil Nadu). He studied upto SSLC. During his school days, Maria made a mark in various disciplines, Soccer and Carrom being his favourite games. All though he continued participating in Inter School games in Soccer, he set his eyes on the game of Carrom at the age of 16 years and started competing in different tournaments. Considering his talent in sports the Custom Department of the Government of India gave him appointment under 'sports quota'. His achievements at the State, National and International levels were recognised when Indian Airlines Offered him an appointment which he accepted in the year 1991. Keeping in view his performance at National/International, he was promoted as Traffic Supdt. And got further increments and promotions.

He won the National Championship in Men section for Nine times XVI Sr.National at Delhi in 1983, XVIII Sr. National at Ambernath (Maharashtra) in 1987, XIX Sr. National at Nagaon (Assam) in 1989, XX Sr.National Guntur (AP) at Guntur, XXI Sr. National at Faridabad (Haryana) 1992, XXV Sr. National in 1996, XXVII Sr. National at Akola (Maharashtra) in 1998 and XXVIII Sr. National at Nagpur (Maharashtra) in 1999.

5. He won Federation Cup three times at Guntur in 1994, at Dumka (Bihar) in 1994, at Guwahati in 1996.
6. He won World Championship two times in the 1st World Carrom Championship at Delhi in the year 1991 and 2nd World Carrom Championship held Sri Lanka in 1995.
