ABCD:open source library automation and digital library software

About the Workshop

Bioinformatics Center in collaboration with PULISAA is organizing a one-day
workshop on “ABCD : open source soft-ware for Library automation and digital library” on Tuesday 31st May 2011The workshop introduce ABCD with hands-on-session. Following are the details of the workshop.

ABCD (Automation of LiBraries and Cen-ters of Documentation) is new Open Source tool developed by BIREME (WHO, Brazil) in collaboration with the Flemish Interuniversity Council, Belgium, using UNESCO’s CDS/ISIS database-technology. It is multilingual, open source software with Web application for the management of libraries, containing core library functions such as acquisitions, cata-loging, lending and database administra-tion. It caters all present needs of 3D li-braries and documentation centers. It cov-ers not only International Bibliographic formats (e.g. MARC, CEPAL) but also local and simple formats dealing with any type of documents. It has excellent index-ing and retrieval features based on UNESCO's ISIS technology, a web OPAC, a portal to manage online, offline digital resources and a serials management mod-ule.

It is possible to apply techniques of Digital Libraries in an integrated approach with the classical library automation, offering integrated search possibilities for end-users in both normal and non-book catalogs and documents.

It’s a great pleasure to have Dr. Egbert De Smet; Professor, University of Antwerp, Institute of Education and Information Sciences, Belgium, for this one-day workshop. He will deliver a talk as well as extend his help to participants for the installation of ABCD with the introduction of basic modules on windows platform. Dr. Egbert is a project-leader, on behalf of the Flemish Inter-university Council, of the international develop-ment team of the ABCD software. He has also handled many projects based on the CDS/ISIS software of UNESCO, which is the underlying technology of ABCD.
