Frequently Asked Questions

What is AAII?

The American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) was founded in 1978 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to education for individual investors. There are currently over 150,000 members nationwide and  nearly 50 local chapters across the country. Please visit the website, www.aaii.com for more information.

What is the Puget Sound Chapter?

The Puget Sound Chapter conducts educational programs with guest speakers covering a variety of non-promotional investment-related topics. In addition, we sponsor smaller Special Interest Groups in Seattle, Mill Creek, Bellevue and Tacoma. These groups meet informally on a regular basis and may deal with specified topics or general group discussions The Chapter is governed by an all-volunteer board with the Chapter President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer elected by the membership. Additional board members are appointed by the President.  Meetings are held every odd month at the Community Center at Mercer View on Mercer Island, WA.

Is this an investment club?

No. We are not a stock or investment club of any kind, nor are we an investment advisory service. Our primary mission is to provide members and guests with tools and information to enable them to invest successfully and to understand current market conditions.

When are local chapter meetings held?

The Puget Sound Chapter typically meets in the evening on the third Wednesday of January, May July and November. Registration and networking usually begin at 6:30 PM with    the program running from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  March and September meetings are scheduled on Saturday mornings with registration at 8:30 AM and the program at 9:00 AM until noon. Meeting dates may be changed to avoid holiday conflicts. Meeting times may vary to accommodate program content. Current information may be found in the calendar link on this website or by going to www.aaii.com and using the “Local Chapters” link.

Must one be a member to attend?

No. Members and guests are always welcome and are encouraged to join us.

Is there a cost to attend?

We ask for a donation in any amount to help cover meeting costs. Particular programs may require that we charge a set fee which will be specified in the meeting announcement. Most donations are in the $12 to $15 per person range. Our meeting costs include facility rental, light refreshments, copying of handouts and, on occasion, speaker travel costs.

How do I arrange to attend a chapter meeting?

There are several ways. AAII members who have designated the Puget Sound Chapter as their affiliation receive a mailed notification approximately three weeks prior to the meeting date. For those who “opt in” additional email reminders are sent as well. Also, the website, www.aaii.com and the “Local Chapters” link, will take you to the current chapter meeting announcement.  All will provide a registration form which can be mailed in to our chapter address for processing. While we certainly welcome “walk ups”, preregistration helps us to better plan for speaker handouts, seating requirements and refreshments. In addition, those who preregister will be assured of speaker handouts and will receive a pre-printed name tag.

How are speakers selected?

There are many factors that influence the selection of speakers. Member feedback, by means of meeting questionnaires, is very valuable in helping us to determine what topics are of interest. Speaker availability and their ability to commit to the meeting schedule are absolutely necessary to allow us sufficient time to prepare meeting announcements. A third factor is our use of the AAII Speakers Bureau, available to Chapter Leaders through a dedicated website. Those speakers who are familiar with AAII chapters and procedures most often provide quality presentations.

How may one become a member?

By visiting the website, www.aaii.com. Regular membership costs $29 per year and includes member website access, the AAII Journal, published 10 times a year, an electronic Mutual Fund Guide and local chapter mailings, as designated my the member.
