Become a Tutor!

Hello friends,

We would like to announce the beginning of our sixth year of Puentes de Salud's tutoring and wellness program, Puentes Hacia el Futuro. This program offers an exciting service opportunity for interested students and professionals. We are accepting volunteers!

Puentes Hacia el Futuro was developed to address the documented need for educational support among the large and growing Mexican immigrant population in South Philadelphia.  Children in the community confront daunting challenges of academic, cultural and social assimilation as they begin their education in the public school system.  Puentes de Salud, our parent organization, has partnered with Philadelphia’s Mexican immigrant community over the past ten years to provide low cost, culturally and linguistically accessible, sustainable health care.  We recognize that educational and health needs are connected and strive to provide an interdisciplinary approach to improving community wellness.

Program Details:

Our program pairs elementary school children one-on-one with tutors/mentors who are undergraduate students, graduate/professional students, and community professionals.  Our volunteers provide elementary school children with homework and literacy support as well as guide them in exploring Spanish language, identity, and self-esteem. Relevant health education is also provided for the children and families.

Tutoring sessions are held from 3:00 to 5:15, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and  Thursdays. Sessions are held at Southwark School at 1835 S. 9th Street, Philadelphia.

The interdisciplinary, collaborative nature of this project, combined with its roots in social determinants of health, provides an important learning experience for volunteer tutors of various academic backgrounds.  We ask for tutors to commit to at least one day per week for the semester. All who are interested are welcome. Ask about receiving credit for college field placement, independent studies and other course related credit. Please contact our staff at for more information.
