Spring Series

posted 13 Dec 2016, 00:50 by Bruce Benson

The spring series was cut short by poor weather and a clash with the Sir Peter Blake regatta so only two days were sailed.
Congratulations to Sam, Cam and Quinn in Optis and Zak, Sam and Keir in Starlings.

Winter 5

Update: Complete results are now posted. Congratulations to Cameron, Quinn and Sam in the Optis and to Zak, Bruce and Sam in Starlings.

Although the forecast was for a light southerly, race 1 got underway in a light to non-existent north westerly. Like Winter 4, the flow of the tide played a part in how the races were played out. The wind disappeared completely after race 1, only to come back from the south. After the course was reset, two more races were sailed. It continued to be shifty and light but was improved on the first race.
Sam, freshly back from a great performance at the AIMs regatta, cleaned up all 3 races with Quinn, Catherine and Cam swapping the next 3 places in each race.
With Zak missing the start and Bruce sailing into a big hole in the wind at the top mark, Sam R and Sophia sailed away for a convincing one two in the first race. Races 2 and 3 were won by Bruce with Zak second and Sam and Sofia swapping 3rd and 4th.

Winter 4

posted 29 Aug 2016, 02:22 by Bruce Benson   [ updated 29 Aug 2016, 02:25 ]

Following the cancellation of Winter 2 and 3 due to bad weather Winter 4 looked really promising. However the weather had a new trick and the wind just stopped.
One, shortened race, was completed, Catherine, Emma B and Oliver taking the Opti honours.

The Starling race was a bit of a mess with only 2 boats making the start line before the hooter. Ben lead from beginning to end with Sam coming in second despite starting about 5 minutes late. Keir got 3rd.

Winter 1

Things looked in doubt during the week with a forecast of winds up to 30kts but on the day it was more like 5 to 15 from the south east. Eight Optis, four Starlings and a Splash turned out. The changeable conditions made things a little more challenging and shook up the results a bit.
The increased breeze, compared with recent sails, caught a few people off guard. A few Optis capsized as did all the Starling / Splash fleet, barring one who wisely choose to retire preemptively. Zak managed a well executed dry capsize to avoid what the rest of us found was pretty chilly.
There were a couple of early retirements to avoid too much shivering...

Racing was cancelled due to a storm.

Congratulations to Starling series winner Matt Metson and Optimist series winner Quinn Brown. Prize giving will be held after racing on the first day of the winter series.

Autumn 3 - 12/6/2016

11 Optis competed today. Micheala Strong got her mojo back, scoring a couple of wins and moving up the order to 4th. The light conditions didn't suit the larger sailors so well allowing Quinn Brown to sneak ahead of the previous leader Oliver Lloyd. Sam Scott is holding 3rd, only 2 points from the lead. (All of this might change a bit when we calculate drops...).

A fleet of 5 Starlings today. As usual, the results are grouped into sailors with their own boats, the club boats and then the old guy who is too big for a Starling. Winds were light to lighter, mostly from the north west. A notable performance from Sophia who, in a club boat, managed to get within a few seconds of the front group at the end of the last race.

It was also cool to see a couple of Opti sailors jump in the club Starlings at the end of the racing to give them a try. Quinn covered himself in glory being the only person to capsize a boat all day but made an excellent recovery by righting it by himself despite being a pretty small guy!
