The Psychosis Studies and Intervention (PSI) Program

The Psychosis Studies and Intervention (PSI) Programme at the University of Hong Kong is an integrated clinical research programme focusing on the scientific study of the early phase of psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia). It is associated with early intervention services (such as the EASY programme of Hong Kong Hospital Authority) which invest in the early detection and optimal treatment of psychosis in the first few years. The PSI program incorporates research, service development, education and clinical activities into a coherent effort to understand the nature and evolution of early psychotic illnesses.

The research program uses primarily a neurocognitive approach as a framework to understand psychotic disorders, and to study key outcome dimensions. From this core framework we relate to other relevant factors such as phenomenological, clinical, psychosocial, experiential and functional issues. These are extended to molecular genetics, morphological, neurochemical, and treatment aspects of the disorder. Our medium-term aim is to delineate key variables (both biological and psychosocial) influencing early outcome in psychosis through a series of naturalistic longitudinal studies. These studies will pave the way for subsequent development of interventions to improve outcome by modifying identified mediating variables.
