Thousandman(Tysyatsky, тысяцкий, sometimes translated as "chiliarch") In ancient Novgorod, a thousandman was the commander of a volunteer armed force, perhaps at one time nominally numbering a thousand (Russian:тысяча, tysyacha) fighting men. In time of peace he was concerned with matters of commerce and commercial law, and in maintaining order within a town. Although the term "thousandman" appears in Pskov chronicles, it is always used in reference to non-Pskovian, usually Novgorodian, officials. The thousandman as an institution apparently did not exist in Pskov.
