What is Data Science?

Abstract/ Synopsis:  Data scientist has been dubbed by HBR as the sexiest job of the 21st century (https://hbr.org/2012/10/data-scientist-the-sexiest-job-of-the-21st-century). But what is really data science? And what are the things a typical data scientist does? In my talk, I am going to discuss what is data science from various perspectives: from projects and organizations that aim to define the data science profession to data science programs (both in academe and industry) that provide education and training to data science aspirants. I will offer insights on how we can advance the data science field in the Philippines and educate future data scientists. Lastly, I will discuss one important technique in data science that I think is often ignored in many data science programs. 

About the Speaker:  

Asst. Prof. Vladimer Kobayashi is a Certified Analytics Professional and faculty member of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, Davao City.  He finished his BS Applied Mathematics (Cum Laude) in 2008 from UP Mindanao and his Master degree in Data Mining & Knowledge Management from the University of Lyon 2 in France and Technical University of Catalonia in Spain. ExaminationHUB: A Hint - Based Automated System for Checking Essay Type of Examination

Abstract 

Technology has continually developed bringing distinct changes in the society whereas in every areas of human routine somehow technology exists. The field of technology affects all aspects of human life such as transportation, communication, appliances, gadgets and etc. which leads convenience in human daily routines or works. Educational institution is one of the areas where technology exists and mostly used for educational purposes. 

Generally, educational institutions conduct a test or examination to measure their students understanding of specific content or the effective application of critical thinking skills. Such tests are being used to evaluate student learning, skill level growth, and academic achievements at the end of an instructional period such as the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year. As the researchers gathered data about this study, they found out that there are instances that checking examination sheets consume much time to teachers working hours. The researchers of ExaminationHUB aim to develop a system or application that lessens the workload of the teacher when it comes to checking examination specifically on the essay part using hints as the bases for checking and scoring. 

The study was guided by the constructive research methodology and rational unified process as the software development process model. For the technical background, PHP, Javascript, Jquery, Visual Studio Code 18.1, MySQL, Adobe Photoshop CS6 used for the entire development of the application. For testing the application, black box and ISO 9126 software quality model were used. There were 26 respondents who were able to test, verify, and validate the functionalities of the application. The respondents were classified into 4 user levels: VP Academic Affairs, Dean of College, Teacher, and Student. Based on the results, 26 out of 26 respondents or 100% were able to commend and approve the functionalities of the application.

Approximating Internal Rate of Return (IRR) in Real Scenarios Using Modified Newton-Raphson Algorithm

Abstract: 

The most popular financial accomplishment measure is the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), employed a great deal in gauging investment productivity. The quickest method to determine it is through iterative techniques, some of the most frequently used of which are secant, bisection, false position and Newton-Raphson algorithms. While the Newton-Raphson algorithm is the fastest of these, it, nevertheless, diverges from the root whenever the initial guess input value from the user is not proximate from the true root of IRR. This research offers an improvement of the old Newton-Raphson algorithm, which 1) automates the computation of an initial input value, thereby eliminating the user’s guess input, 2) increases accuracy, 3) reduces iterations and 4) diminishes runtime. This research concludes that said improvement, undeniably, does not necessitate guess initial input from the user and enables the algorithm to converge to the root with better accuracy, lesser iterations and quicker runtime.

Engr., Nerio Pascual graduated with a BS degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the St. Louis University, Baguio City and Bachelor of Laws from MSU-Gensan.  He also graduated with degrees in Master in IT (MIT) from Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU) and Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU).  Currently, he is on thesis writing stage for his Doctoral in IT Program of the Technological Institute of the Philippines.

A study of Genetic Algorithm with a Feed-Forward Neural Network on real-time decision of a Tower Defense Game

Nowadays there are many researchers and game developers started using Evolutionary Algorithm to research and implement the Artificial Intelligence computer bot to various Real Time Strategy games, the computer bot will learn the players or opponent’s behaviors and counter their strategy to enhance the gaming experience but those implemented RTS games are just a simulation. The proposed study intends to experiment if the Genetic Algorithm is capable of achieving Artificial Intelligence enemy bot to a Tower Defense game with the help of Feed-Forward Neural Network and by integrating a Supervised Learning for the approach of the AI-training. In this study, the role of the Genetic Algorithm is for the spawning of the enemies by using the genetic operators: Selection, Crossover, and Fitness Method.


A Cross-Platform Community Assistance and Services Evaluation Using Crowdsourcing Model for Barangay Crossing Matina 74-A

The purpose of the study is to help improve the community engagement of Barangay Crossing Matina 74-A by providing a web-based application where residents or renters can submit campaigns that allow others to be informed about the problems and needs of the community with regards to environmental issues, assistance concerns, and services. This becomes an opportunity for non-resident of Barangay Crossing Matina 74-A to get involved and be part of the solution as volunteers. The researchers utilized the PHP and CodeIgniter to develop the said application.




Developing the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) for the 45th Special Action Company (SAC) of the 4th Special Action Battalion (SAB) of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF)

The present study deals with the development of the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) of the 45thSpecial Action Company (SAC) of The 4th Special Action Battalion (SAB) of The Philippine National Police Special Action ForcePNP-SAF as one of the strategies to speed-up the generation of PNP personal information data sheet and updating the essential information for a specific and future purposes using the Visual .NET programming language, XAMPP Control Panel, MySQL and Crystal Report.  The system requirements were specified to smoothly run the application.

The researchers adopted the waterfall model in achieving the entire study and utilized the agile scrum both the incremental and iterative model in developing the HRIS application.  The researchers have identified the different phases and sprints to achieve the duration and accomplishment of the system.  There were series of test cases conducted to guarantee that the system is free from errors and successfully met the requirements of the user.

During the user training acceptance and deployment, it was found out that the PNP personnel and the Battalion Commander were satisfied with the outcome of the system and therefore conclude that the objectives 1) to provide a secured database in storing records of PHP police; 2) to create a user-friendly interface with easy navigation and usage; and 3) to provide a mechanism for fast and accurate generation of pertinent and purposive reports were implemented in the application.

She had worked with various types of organizations including international non-government organization, humanitarian NGO, consulting firm, and multinational company. Being a builder of the tech community in the Philippines, Rose studies internet governance and open internet. She believes in the power of technology to unleash one's unlimited potential while acknowledging the other edge of technology to undermine human rights. With that, digital literacy is one of her great advocacies. 

Recently, Rose was chosen as one of the Members of the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) 2019 in Switzerland and an Open Internet for Democracy Leader 2018 by OpenNet Global. She is also an alumna of the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy 2018 held in South Korea. She's also the Digital Literacy Champion in Davao City in 2018
