Course Description

This Certification Review Course is an introduction into Linux System Administration.  No prior knowledge of Linux is required; only general computing knowledge and experience. This course is perfectly suited for system administrators, developers and power-users migrating their IT infrastructure to Linux. The labs and concepts are independent of a particular distribution of Linux; and apply to other flavors of UNIX as well.

Learning Objectives

This course equips students with the required competencies to handle the Linux / Unix OS and prepare them for the LPI LPIC-1 101 exam which mainly covers fundamental Linux skills such as file management and manipulation, text processing, command line use, package management, filesystems, hardware, and more. 

Course Design

This five-day intensive and hands-on training is designed to prepare students to take the 101 exam of the LPI level 1 certification with confidence and have a high impact on the IT personnel’s performance as well as to his team.
  
Courseware.  Our curriculum directly targets the most recent LPI exam objectives; thus, we use the latest version (July 6, 2012 US release) of the Guru Labs Student Manual.
  
Presentations and Simulations. Several presentations and scenario activities from the participants shall be part of the course delivery to encourage application of concepts learned in re-created scenarios.  
  
Skills Assessment and Exam Review & Simulation. There shall be a simulated exam at the end of the program to measure preparedness for the certification exam.  Should the student pursue an international certification from Pearson VUE, then this portion of the training can gauge readiness for the next level.

Academe-Industry Dialogue and PSITE 11 MSW

Please be informed that there will be Industry-Academe dialogue between the IT Educators and the ICT Industries this coming Sept 21, 2012 from 8:00-12:00 noon at the Conference Room, UM Matina, Davao City.  This will be followed with the Monthly Seminar Workshop from 1-4 pm which include a lecture/talk on "Mining Information: An Invitation to Research" by Mr. Vladimer B. Kobayashi.

Mr. Kobayashi finished his BS in Applied Mathematics (Cum Laude) from the University of the Philippines Mindanao as scholar of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for four years.   He was the top graduate of the entire batch thus, he was the valedictory speaker during their graduation and recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence - 2008, and College of Science and Mathematics Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence – 2008.  He also received the Award for Academic Excellence in Science from DOST - Science Education Institute in 2011.

Immediately after his graduation, he joined the university and taught advance and applied mathematics courses.  In 2010, he pursued his MSc Data Mining and Knowledge Management from Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain and University of Lyon 2, Lyon, France with the support from the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship/ Fellowship from August 2010 - July 2012.  

He will go on study leave again starting October 2012 to pursue PhD in Computer Science, a joint program between the University of Jean Monnet in France and University of Tokyo in Japan.

Android Development Basics (Syllabus)

Course Description
This course is the first part of the Android Development course series. This course will help introduce the participant to developing basic mobile applications using the Android SDK. The course is designed for those who will take part in designing, creating, and testing applications for the Android mobile phone platform.

Pre-requisites
The trainees must meet any of the following pre-requisites:
- Must be an I.T. Graduate, I.T. Professional or I.T. Enthusiast.
- Preferably familiar with the following: Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) and Object-oriented Programming (OOP).

Course Objectives
By the completion of this course, participants are expected to:
-  Install necessary software that will help in developing Android applications.
-  Be familiar with the Project File Explorer and its contents.
-  Ability to program with Activities and Intents.
-  Create different GUI Layouts and Themes.
-  Accommodate Events and handle Data in different ways.
-  Run applications in the Android Virtual Device or Emulator.
