Healthier Norwalk Kids
Nutrition and Activity Program
What is it?
A terrific program that helps to increase children’s physical activity and allow them to eat smarter.
Nutrition & Activity Lessons
Within the child’s school day, a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist will provide lessons on healthy eating and the importance of physical activity. The lessons will take place once a week in classrooms. The purpose is to educate children on the importance of a healthy diet and including physical activity in their day.
Breakfast Boot Camp
An optional breakfast and exercise program, called the “breakfast boot camp,” is be offered. A free healthy breakfast and guided physical activity is provided to children before school if parents so choose.
Parental Involvement
Parents are encouraged to attend two parent nights. Parent night participation is voluntary.
Parents are also encouraged to provide a healthy snack and water for children while in school.
Newsletter
A Project LEAN newsletter is sent home to parents 5 times during the school year to share lessons, fun facts and areas where parents can help reinforce nutrition and activity lessons.
Results
Over the course of several years, results have shown improved trends with BMIs, and students have demonstrated increased knowledge about nutrition and activity and their health.
