What we have discovered through the course of this project is that samples and their selections indeed have distinct trends, and that multi-genre sampling is far more common amongst more prolific samplers. Such trends point toward possible relationships between samples and sampling songs that can be demonstrated and analyzed. Given many current developments in international copywrite law, finding such relationships, especially regarding any links between profitability or popularity between samples and sampling songs. Given the popularity and spread of sampled music, such an investigation will remain relevant and important for quite some time.
Use open APIs for research and more data mining, especially on sampling songs- Unfortunately, the database we used did not contain a great deal of information, specifically on the sampling songs themselves. Open music APIs such as discogs.com would seem particularly promising
Use Billboard ratings to track popularity- Billboard has just opened their API, although it is still rather limited in function. Hopefully, with future updates, it will be able to compare sampling and sampled Billboard ratings, and be able to identify possible correlations.Â
