I am running into some problems with Blackboard's calculations of final
grades, so I've turned them off. As soon as I load your final grades
into a spreadsheet and calculate averages, I'll post your real final
grades into ecampus. You should have access to them this afternoon.
Sorry for the troubles . . . now I remember why I chose not to use
Blackboard this semester!
Have a great summer!
Portfolios are due by 5 pm Friday, May 1, 2009.
To submit your portfolio, please log on to our class Blackboard site. Click the ASSIGNMENTS tab in the navigation bar and then click on the link to view/complete the portfolio. In the comments box of the next screen, type in the URL of your portfolio. Then click SUBMIT. Please do not click Save. If you do so, I will not recieve your URL.
Once I grade your portfolio, I will upload my comments and your grade to Blackboard. To access this, go to TOOLS in the navigation bar and then click MY GRADES. You'll see your grade for the portfolio and the other class assigments. To access my comments for your portfolio, click on the letter grade.
Additionally, from time to time I use examples of anonymous student work in class as models (positive, not negative). If you would like to give me permission to use your portfolio or individual essays, please state so in the email. I will not use work of students who do not give me permission.
Finally, consider submitting one or more of your papers to e-Vision, JMU's online journal of excellent essays written for GWRIT 103 classes. See http://www.jmu.edu/evision
for more info.
The article titled "Urban Warfare" is available through the JMU full text database Wilson Omnifile. The easiest way to get to it is to go to the JMU library webpage and click on the link for periodical locator. Then type in Advertising Age in the search box. In the list of results, click on the link for Wilson Web. You'll then get a list of volumes. Click on the link for volume 71, number 37 (sept. 4, 2000). Then click on the link for the article and read it.
To accommodate our snow day, I have moved Monday's reading (on Binge Drinking) to Wednesday's class. We will pick up Wednesday's reading on anti-smoking ads the Monday we return from Spring Break (3/16). We'll spend half the class discussing the reading and you will have the other half to work on your papers. Midterm Progress Conferences will still be held this week Thurs. and Fri. Conferences on drafts of writing assignment #2 will also be held as scheduled for March 18, 19, & 20.
Please share your papers with me, too!
will be held as scheduled today (and Friday, too).
My son is still too ill for me to leave him today, so I will not be able to hold conferences today. If your conference is scheduled for today, please go ahead and post your comments on your group members' papers. We will try to hold the conferences NEXT WEEK WEDNESDAY if that suits everyone in the group. The two groups that are scheduled to meet during class time will have to be scheduled at another time that is convenient for everyone in the group. We can talk before/after class Monday about scheduling.
As of now, Thursday and Friday conferences will be held as planned. That said, you should check this site and your email just in case.
I am not yet sure if I will be available for tomorrow's conferences. I'm thinking probably not, unless my son's health improves significantly . . . still, that may just happen, so check this site again tomorrow morning if you are schedule to conference with me tomorrow.
My son was admitted to the hospital early this afternoon. As a result, I am not able to hold class at 3:35. I will be in touch with these students with instructions for posting papers to google docs and with other pertinent information about the conferences.
All students should check this website and their email Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, just in case I am not able to be on campus for the conferences.
I have also invited each of you to share a document titled GWRIT Blogs through google docs. If you did not receive an email invitation to share this document (I sent it to your gmail accounts), please email me and let me know.
