Dr. S. Kalainathan studied research at VIT University, where he was a Professor (Higher Academic Grade) at the Center for Nanotechnology Research. His research concerns the crystal growth of Nonlinear optical, Ferroelectric, Scintillation, and Biological crystals. He focuses on thin film preparation of Intermediate band gap solar cells, magnetic materials for magnetic memory, and gas sensors. Laser Shock Peening (LSP) was also investigated for surface modification of steel, aluminium, titanium, and its alloys.
He has over 30 years of research experience in Crystal Growth, Thin Films, and Laser Shock Peening. He is also the principal investigator of 14 extramural projects.
Dr. S.Kalainathan earned his doctorate in Physics from Anna University, Chennai, India, in 1992, where he initiated the 'Thin Film Laboratory.’ In 1994, he joined VIT University, and in 1998, he established one of the very first active research labs, the Crystal Research Center. Through this lab, he conducted extensive research into the field of crystal growth. The Crystal Research Center has been renamed "Centre for Crystal Growth (CCG)" since 2012. So far, he has supervised 25 doctoral theses. He has reckoning publications to his credit, comprising 303 publications in internationally reputed journals. He is a life member of the Indian Association of Crystal Growth and ISTE.
