Hello, my name is John A. Kirk and I am Chair and Donaghey Professor of History at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR).

My research interests cover several strands.

The first is the "short" civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s which centers on the leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The second is the  "long civil rights movement" that looks at the origins and legacies of struggles for racial justice in the 1950s and 1960s.

The third is a focus on African American History and civil rights in the state of Arkansas.

My teaching reflects my research interests covering topics such as King's leadership, local civil rights struggles, and African American, southern, and US history in the twentieth century.
