SHOULD I SAVE THE BASE FOR MY TV?

The base has to be taken off the tv before it is mounted (if the tv is brand new, it already may not be attached, and won't need to be), but it is a good idea to keep it. It's one of those things that you will probably never use again, but you can't throw it away (so it will just live in your attic until the end of time). If you do get rid of it, as soon as you do there will end up being a situation where you will need it and/or wish you still had it. 

Of course, I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, because I have thrown all of my tv bases away. But I am mildly O.C.D. (self diagnosed), in a way where I can't stand to have things around that just take up space. Since I anticipate that my tv's will ALWAYS be mounted, and I fully intend to use them until they die, that was enough reason for me to ditch the bases.
