The Pepsi Evolution Crisis, 1992

Many years ago, once upon a time, in 1992, Pepsi decided to run an advertising campaign which showed the evolution of humankind to its current form as consumers of that particular brand of cola:


Presumably, the evolution progresses from right to left, as in Hebrew.  Anyway, the implied belief in Darwinism was too much for the Israeli ultra-orthodox authorities, who threatened the Pepsi Cola Company in no uncertain terms: see the attached newspaper articles.  The really odd thing is that evolution is NOT a key issue for Judaism, but the opposition to Darwinism has been so closely associated with religion since the growth of American Fundamentalism, that it has become a kind of a test of faith even for many orthodox Jews.

Pepsi caved in, and quickly produced replacement advertisements in which progress rather than evolution was suggested:
