St Matthew by Caravaggio

I mentioned in class the painting by Caravaggio (1573-1610), now in Rome, which depicts 'The Calling of Saint Matthew', when Jesus went down to the tax office and selected Matthew to be an apostle.

There is another wonderful painting, also by Caravaggio, also now in Rome, which shows Matthew writing his gospel.  The angel dictates the text to him, counting on his fingers the points to be made, while Matthew balances on a bench looking like a not-very-smart schoolboy:
