Habsburgs "R" Us

If you study the chart below, you can see why Emperor Maximilian I was so upset about Luther.  For many years indeed, the Habsburgs had been working on a dynastic plan to take over the world (well, Europe, anyway).  All they needed to do was to get connected by marriage with everybody, and to allow the children to inherit.  They were almost there....and now here comes Luther and makes trouble in 1517, just two years before the election of Max's grandson Charles V.  And when we talk about the Peace of Augsburg (1555), you will see that Maximilian was right to be upset...
