Bernadette [Soubirous (1844-1879)]

Between 11 February - 16 July 1858, the Virgin Mary visited Bernadette Soubirous 18 times in the town of Lourdes in southern France, according to the girl's testimony.  At the same time, a spring appeared on the site, whose water was credited with miraculous cures.  Lourdes soon became the greatest pilgrimage site in Europe and remains so today.

The name "Bernadette" also became a popular one for Roman Catholic girls.  For people of a certain age, her name brings to mind the classic song by the "Four Tops" (1967):
