For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end...

And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.

And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon1834-92

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was England’s best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification.

....Continue ~ The life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was called the prince of preachers. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London’s famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian John Gill).

The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall.
In these venues Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification.
In 1861 the congregation moved permanently to the new Metropolitan Tabernacle.

"In Joshua the high priest we see a picture of each and every child of God,"

By Charles Haddon Spurgeon

In Joshua the high priest we see a picture of each and every child of God, who has been made nigh by the blood of Christ, and has been taught to minister in holy things, and enter into that which is within the veil. Jesus has made us priests and kings unto God, and even here upon earth we exercise the priesthood of consecrated living and hallowed service. But this high priest is said to be 'standing before the angel of the Lord,' that is, standing to minister. This should be the perpetual position of every true believer. Every place is now God's temple, and His people can as truly serve Him in their daily employments as in His house. They are to be always 'ministering,' offering the spiritual sacrifice of prayer and praise, and presenting themselves a 'living sacrifice.' But notice where it is that Joshua stands to minister, it is before the angel of Jehovah. It is only through a mediator that we poor defiled ones can ever become priests unto God. I present what I have before the messenger, the angel of the covenant, the Lord Jesus; and through Him my prayers find acceptance wrapped up in His prayers; my praises become sweet as they are bound up with bundles of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia from Christ's own garden. If I can bring Him nothing but my tears, He will put them with His own tears in His own bottle for He once wept; if I can bring Him nothing but my groans and sighs, He will accept these as an acceptable sacrifice, for He once was broken in heart, and sighed heavily in spirit. I myself, standing in Him, am accepted in the Beloved; and all my polluted works, though in themselves only objects of divine abhorrence, are so received, that God smelleth a sweet savour. He is content and I am blessed. See, then, the position of the Christian--'a priest-- standing--before the angel of the Lord.'

McCheyne's Daily Bible Reading

 D A I L Y - B R E A D

Nurture Your Spirit and Refresh Your Soul

Calendar for reading through the

BIBLE  THE WORD OF GOD in a year.

By the late minister of St Peter's Church, Dundee

R. M. McCheyne, M. A.

 About:

  1. Scottish Presbyterian pastor ~ one of Scotland's greatest preachers, accomplished Hebrew scholar.
  2. emphasized personal piety, prayer, compassion, and evangelism.
  3. Christ-centeredness, his love for true holiness, and his compassion for the common man.  Music, art and poetry were his  natural gifts. At fourteen he entered Edinburgh University, studying literature and poetry. Mastered Latin, Greek and Hebrew, in his studies of divinity.
  4. Stranger weeping "I never before met a man," he said (in reference to McCheyne), "so Jesus-like."
  5.  'the chief thing about him was the unction from the Holy Spirit ... at times he was awakening ... at other times he was melting and moving as he dwelt on the great theme of redeeming love.'
  6. died in his thirtieth year and in the seventh year of ministry while he was the pastor of St Peter's Free Church. St. Peter's Church, Dundee, erected into a quoad sacra parish, congregation numbered eleven-twelve hundred hearers.
  7. epitaph describes him as a man who 'was honoured by his Lord to draw many wanderers out of darkness into the path of life.'
Robert Murray McCheyne's short but remarkable life had an ordinary start in Edinburgh, Scotland. However, McCheyne is mostly remembered for his fervent prayer and devotional life. He spent two hours daily in meditation and prayer, including an hour devoted to people of the Jewish faith. On Sundays, he would spend six hours in prayer and devotional reading. He felt so strongly about prayer and worship that he developed a calendar to encourage people to read once through The Old Testament and twice through the New Testament and Psalms each Year

Although McCheyne died at age thirty, his devout life and passionate ministry continue to inspire believers.
Every sermon is full of Christ: the sinners need of Him, the fullness of His grace, the happiness of those who come to Him, and the danger of stopping short of genuine faith in Him. Inspiring Christians , that one must first know Christ, and live in the atmosphere of His love.
