Welcome to this site which provides guidance and resources to support anyone involved with the training of primary teachers to teach music.

The majority of the materials you will find here were generated by 21 different providers all of whom designed and delivered one or two training modules during 2012. These modules were funded by the then Training and Development Agency (TDA) in response to the National Plan for Music which highlighted the need for more training for generalist class teachers and for those who might have more specialist aspirations as music coordinators or leaders. The modules were piloted with undergraduate and postgraduate trainees towards the end of their initial training courses.

In January 2013, an Expert Panel was formed to choose, edit and organise suitable material that could be shared with teachers. We have chosen material that can ‘stand up’ on its own and while we are aware of the gaps we aim to fill these by commissioning new material or inviting providers to contribute further material. We have also included examples of good practice reported in the module evaluation reports and have collated the existing publications (print and web based) that providers used in their teaching.

With the introduction of the new National Curriculum the Department for Education has established Expert Panels for all subjects to provide guidance to teachers working in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 . The Music Expert Panel has continued (with new members - see below) to address this task and it is expected that this work will be integrated with more comprehensive guidance.

If you use these materials please acknowledge the source and the author/s where this is stated.
