William Young married Ann Davis who was born in Australia. Ann looked after her brothers Charles Oliver Bond Davis and Edward Davis, after their parents died. William and Ann brought them to New Zealand in 1830.

Mr William Joseph Young, a well known Maori interpreter died yesterday morning from heart failure at the residence of his nephew, Mr H Tattersall, Newton. The deceased who was 69 years of age, was born at Hokianga and was the son of the late Captain W. Young, formerly of Kouto, and second pilot at Hokianga in the early days. Mr Young was highly respected by Europeans and Maoris alike and had a widespread acquaintance in the North. The funeral takes place this afternoon at Symonds St cemetery.
