Details: His father was a respectable citizen of London and the family emigrated to Sydney on the 'Albion' in 1827. William Wood born 1817 came to New Zealand in 1838, and joined the whaling crew of Richard Barrett's at Queen Charlotte Sound. In 1839 he was part of the crew of the obat that put off to welcome the Tory and Col Wakefield. In 1843 while engaged at Dogherty's station in Cloudy Bay, he was one of the crew that took off the beach, the survivors from the Wairau Massacre. Whilst in Cloudy Bay he was married by Rev. Samuel Ironside to a native woman and they have had a large family of children. In 1949 he came to Wellington where he worked as a respected carpenter and boat-builder. He died in September 1863.
