William Cornwallis Symonds

William arrives in Auckland on the 'Anna Watson' from the Bay of Islands in August 1840.

In 1836 William Cornwallis Symonds, an agent of the Edinburgh based Manukau- Waitemata Land Company, bought the land previously purchased by Thomas Mitchell and he came to New Zealand in 1839 according to papers lodged in the library of NSW   Settlers from the Company arrived in 1841 at Cornwallis (Puponga Point) in the Manukau Harbour, to find nothing. Most  left for Auckland.  

His brother, John Jermyn Symonds, born 1816, Fowley, Hants. arrives a few years later.
