Country of origin:
Area in New Zealand: Stewart Island
Details: Southland Times ,1879 One of the oldest of the white settlers in Stewart Island has just passed away. Robert was known as ‘Old Lowrie” and had been, until his death on Sunday last, for 45 years, one of the most conspicuous figures on ‘the neck.” He was one of the old whalers who made that place their home when settlement in New Zealand had hardly begun. Lowrie was in his 78th year. His huge figure was seen daily at the door of his house, a red cowl on his head and in his hand a telescope. He has left a few old mates behind. One of these is above 80 and the other 70 and neither shows indications of leaving the Neck for a while.
