James Stuart

Arrived: 1823 (before)
Country of origin:
Area in New Zealand: Otago
Source: Beyond the Moon by Peter Entwisle

Details: Stuart had come from Kangaroo Island in Bass Strait with an aboriginal wife and child. He was captured by Maori and lived and worked alongside them. Stuart and Caddell both boarded the Snapper, Captain Edwardson, and went to Sydney in 1823. Captain Dawson of the Samuel brought Stuart's wife and child to Sydney the following year after Stuart had returned to find her. She and her child had lived a miserable existance in the meantime. It is supposed that they are orginally arrived with another sealing gang by way of the General Gates (American), and that she escaped when the gang was attacked.
