Details: Born 1810, Eastbourne, Sussex. At first he was whaling out of Kapiti and met John Jones in Sydney. In the book, (McNab) 'The Old Whaling Days', is referenced saying John Jones had seven whaling stations in 1837. One of these was at Jacob's River (Aparima) with John Howell in charge of it. John married Caroline Brown (dau of Capt Brown, whaling trade and Te Wharerarimu) on August 10th 1845. After whaling, John took to farming, securing two stations, Fairlight and Flints Bush. They had three sons and six daughters.
