Details: James was born at Weymouth, England and started work aged 11yrs in a fishing boat. In 1825 he arrived in Australia aboard the 'Alexander Henry' aged 16 and went to work on whalers. He arrived in New Zealand in April 1830 and went to work for Jacky Guard at Te Awaiti. He got his nickname by always saying in reply to a question about the weather 'its getting worser and worser'.
He married Maata Te Nahi and they eight children.
