Details: Edward was the son of John William Harris and Tukura and was born at Turanganui. He was known to the natives as Hareti. He farmed his fathers land on the Ruataniwha plains and in 1858 became registrar of the Native Land Court and clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Napier. He compiled genealogies of the important families in the district. He served on the Cook County Council amongst many boards he took part in.
He died on 26 March 1898.
27th July 1898 (Nelson Evening Mail) Gisborne, This Day. The death is announced of Mr E. F. Harris, one of the most prominent local settlers, aged 68. He was born here, his father being the first trader to settle on the East Coast.
