Coffee

Arrived: 1839 (before)
Country of origin:
Area in New Zealand: Chatham Islands
Source: Paperspast, Timaru Herald 17 February 1881.
NZETC Y The Old Whaling Days; Robert McNab

Details: He was found to be living at the Chathams when some French boats went to investigate the disappearance of the 'Jean Bart'. At the NZETC site there is an essay about the incident. On Paperspast there is a paragraph about it based on the story of one man who was there at the time and told his friend, which the friend relates to us. Both mention an Englishman who was living there among the natives. The NZETC story gives his name (Coffee) and that he was married to a native woman.

The Kawhe family claim descent from him.
