Country of origin: Australia

Details: Charles came to New Zealand with his sister Ann, brother-in-law,Capt W Young and his brother Edward in 1830. He became tutor to the Woon children.  He assisted at the Treaty of Waitangi negotiations and was a gifted interpretor. Although he worked for the new government, he retained a great respect and liking for Maoridom and this didn't always meet with approval from his colleagues. His best-known work, The life and times of Patuone , was published in 1876. His writings are a worthy memorial to a more determined believer in a bicultural future than most of his contemporaries.
