Details: He was a cousin of 'Yankee Bill' Hazel and claimed to have cut the timber for the first church that was built at Russell. He worked as a cooper at various whaling stations on the East Coast and helped prepare the timber for the Porourangi meeting-house in 1888. Then we worked on sheep stations. He died at the Memorial Home in Gisborne in 1916 aged 101 years. (J.A. Mackay has him down as just 'William', but the newspaper and NZ BDM have him as 'Charles').
