Details: John Greening also known as Happy Jack. He claimed some 700 acres at Table Cape in 1842 which he said had been given to him by some Maori chiefs. He married a Maori woman and had previously been living at the Bay of Islands and was a whaler. He made a home at Te Mahanga (Happy Jack's Landing) when he retired and afterwards moved to Whangawehi where he kept a light to warn mariners. After he died in 1880, his wife kept this up and received a small pension from the government to do so.
