Details: George Edward Read, born Suffolk in 1815 came out to the Southern Whale fishery in 1835 on the Enderby's whaling ships. In 1838 he was with Captain White on the Medway. He became 1st mate on the Luna, Capt Ellis which traded on the East Coast in 1842. In 1845 he opened a store at Mawhai, supervised the building of the Mendlsham (named after his birthplace) and then opened another store at Purehua. Whatever he did turned out well and he became wealthy and renown in the district.
